Ophelia after Shakespeare

Is Ophelia the most iconic character of Shakespeare? Perhaps because her suicide is controversial and unintelligible. Many experts in Shakespeare think she cannot commit suicide because a mad person never does. But Shakespeare is not a psychiatrist.

Before Romanticism the suicide was a sin, so artists never saw as a romantic and valiant act. But the things change and the people's mind too. The Romantics break the rules of the Art and Ophelia became a symbol.

In the Ophelia of Millais, the artist is looking for an excuse to paint the nature. The suicide of the lady is just a second plan.

But there are other artists- between painters and photographers- that take Ophelia as the main point.

Koray Parlak takes the moment when the wife of Dante Gabriel Rossetti lays down in the bathtub for Millais' Ophelia to represent the death of the lady.

Romina Ressia, the Argentinian photographer, tries to be more realistic with the scene when Ophelia's body is floating in the river.

Marie Hochhaus' vision is closer to Millais' painting.

Also Ophelia inspired the film "Melancholia" by Lars Von Trier, where the characters live between depression and happiness.
